Cobalt Village, located in northeastern Madison County, Missouri, has roots that stretch back to the mid-19th century. The community takes its name from the nearby Madison Cobalt Mine, discovered in 1847, which became part of the larger Mine La Motte–Fredericktown Mining District. This district was historically significant for its production of cobalt and other minerals, and it helped shape the early economy of the region.

Though small in size—just 0.15 square miles—the village grew as families settled near the mining operations and the county seat of Fredericktown. Over time, Cobalt became known not only for its mineral heritage but also for its tight-knit community spirit. By the 2010 census, the population stood at 226, and by 2020 it had grown modestly to 264 residents.

The mining industry eventually declined, and the Madison Cobalt Mine closed after periods of operation and shutdown. Yet the legacy of the mine remains an important part of the village’s identity, symbolizing both the strength and resilience of the people who built their lives here. Today, Cobalt Village stands as a reminder of Missouri’s mining past while embracing its future as a welcoming small town.
